Hi Everyone!
Wondering if anyone can advise with regard to changing a 'bayonet / chuck mechanism' on a Hilti TE-22 Rotary Hammer drill?
I've seen this thread (https://www.woodworkforums.com/f13/hilti-te-17-handbook-120590) which discusses the predecessor model, the TE-17, which contains some related information.
Basically, my father owns a TE-22 (the successor to the classic TE-17) which is a hammer drill about 15-20 years old and built like a Tiger tank, which has been a really good reliable tool until recently ... the past year, drill bits constantly kept getting stuck in the chuck mechanism, i think it is because the ball bearings in the 'SDS style' front chuck mechanism have worn ...
So, we took it to Hilti Sydney, who refused to work on it because it's too old. This was a bit disappointing because they refused to even look at it, saying that they were just the front counter, and all modern tools were couriered to a special repair facility, so we were out of luck.
So, we looked on the Internet and were able to order a replacement front chuck mechanism from Ebay which fits either the TE-17 or TE-22 ...
Problem is ... Dad and I can't figure out how to take the front chuck mechanism out of the 'bayonet' / rear chuck mechanism ... We managed to find a service manual, but it doesn't really give us any starting point for taking it apart ...
I then contacted the Ebay seller, who turned out to be Chinese and who had no experience or advice on the matter (
We took the black plastic guard off, but it didn't reveal a circlip (like on the Bosch, or DeWalt drills that allow one to easily change the chuck)
Could I please ask some of the older, wiser, guys if they know what we could do?
I made a video to help explain. Apologies in advance for my referring to every component as 'the um ... bit part'
Anyhow, thanks for reading this far ... would be grateful for any helpful advice as it would be a shame to retire this otherwise brilliant tool.
